I think it it very important to know exactly where your eggs or birds comes from so that their heritage can stay as pure as it can. These are some of the truest lines I have run across.

Ultimate Fowl Breeder List

These are Some Original French Black Copper Marans C1 Jeane Lines.

I believe the reason for all the conflict here in the US and between people, is because the marans has become such a issue about getting it recognized into the APA. Right now there’s not a standard And right now we are near not near ready to present marans to the APA. It is a work in progress and until what we present is  of standard then I feel we need to be more epatience with whet we present to them.

There are as many so-called different standards as there are groups trying to claim the standard. So until the APA decides for the US, there really is only one standard, The French Standard.

I was blessed enough to have some of these wonderful  birds dropped into my lap so to speak, early spring-summer 2008. but to my own surprised had to learn, real quick, the animosity’s it would bring upon me. The same animosity that has been between breeders for years.  Little did I know that I stumbled right into their empires, sales and egos, that took years to build.

US breeders has spent years trying to develop the standard for the APA to recognized  and still we have not yet got there.  Maybe that because there is just to many different oppinions.  One standard can’t fill everyone specs.

Weather APA excepts the French or America standard I really don’t know. That’s for others out there to try and claim that for themselves.

My C1 Jeane line of the French Black Copper Marans, has been proven and will remain as pure as I can keep them. I would hope to some day be able to find others that can help me with a breeding program as I’m educating myself though research and past archives .

I have not always made friends in the process but was told to expect that. The friends that I have made…..out weighs that.

So I’ll keep you updating on my birds progress. There will not be any other birds introduce in a few years so you do not have to worry about that. They will remain true.

When I get ready to sell birds or eggs, they will be posted on the forum or my website.

I do however have a more gentler forum you can join so more relaxed information.

I have meet bunches of really nice Marans folks out there. some that love these birds with all their hearts.

Oh well I never fret the small stuff…….and it’s all small stuff.

Now about my breeding & showing.

I have been showing chickens when it was unheard to show a chicken instead of eating them. I showed back in the 70’s. Gave it up for a while to raise kids. Back in those days you had to make a choice. Couldn’t afford both. So I sold out my best stock and ate the rest.

Best I ever done was took 10 birds to the show and came home with 9 first prizes. So I knew just a little about what I was doing. Didn’t keep 100’s of birds, just kept very few of the best. Not much to have to know about breeding I wouldn’t think.

We didn’t have much to go by back in the old days (just a book called American Standard of Perfection). Now days you have the internet, yes it complicates everything and every aspect. That’s why it is out there. We never use to have to do the things we use to do but since someone on the internet tells us it has to be a certain way, then we think it does.

I sure don’t want to be doing something right and change it so it can be wrong so I can make it back right again. Wow see how confusing all that is. It’s pretty simple if you have enough common sense to keep it simple. But if you know how to make it complicated then I guess that makes you pretty …………..smart. At least to others.

I have lived in America my whole life and not just for a few short years. So I am traditional. I won’t Bull-Sh?? you and I won’t alienate you. I am a simple person and have simple ways.

I am from the old school and I do have some of the finest, and purest and uncomplicated Original French Black Copper Marans in the USA.

These are there chicks. I will add more as I go. I just want everyone to see what great breeds these are and watch them as the grow and strut. Only natural the first big male chick would be named Jess.

Jess at 6 weeks. He is growing so big. I can’t wait to see what he will turn out like.

Well not real sure what happen the last couple of weeks but other Roosters have run off and left Jess. Now I can’t make up my mind who I want to keep and who to pass on to other breeders. I have several large roosters and these below are now 8 weeks old.

I cannot believe that these guys are crowing already at just 2  1/2 month old. That’s insane. Jess at 2.75 months below.

Please remember I am very busy with the MOAC  site and new auction site so please I may not  get my Harvest Monn pages updated as often as I should. Things could change other places and I knot get them updated here. Thanks

  • Loved your entire website and especially the Marans posts!
Very informative and I do hope you update your pics of the gorgeous chicks as they grow.
Keep up the great blog, I’ve bookmarked it to come back to.
    Take care!

  • Thanks so much Randi. I hope to be able to get them all named and get some really neat pictures of them. Right now you wouldn’t think it, but I think they are posing. Hope to make a beautiful Marans calender as well. With others members who request their birds on it. Take the process through the whole year from egg to egg. Hows that sounds?

  • I would love to see the calendar when you’re done. Will you be making them to sell? That’d be awesome if you did since there is so little out there with the BCMs. Your pictures are wonderful and I’m saving them for reference when mine get here. I like to look at them at the different stages and then hopefully be able to tell which are the roos and which are the pullets early on.
Glad to see how well these babies are progressing and know you’re proud as can be about them!

  • You really think some one would buy them

  • I do think people would buy them, especially Marans owners/breeders! There are very few Marans photos out and about and after all…who can resist the cute factor? ;)

  • I am hoping folks will buy them. I am the only one in this area but then you also have to educate folks on them. They don’t know what they are buying until you show them. That’ s is where the fair comes in.

  • howdy – nice site – we are just getting into the BCMs i’m on the list for Jesse and i have some chicks here from Margaret from Endless Farms – and look forward to them growing

  • Hey Debbie I was just surfing the web last night and came across your web site. I’ll add your your site to my links if you don’t mind. I am starting a web page as we in the next few short weeks. So stay in touch.
    Thanks

  • Hey Keith sorry for the delay in response. I have been open vacation. I will have eggs the first of Dec. I am taking orders now to get on the list for I am only taking up to about out a dozen orders then re- evaluate them. Then will check the colors and fertility rate then up date info on the eggs. Thanks

  • littlepeddler,
I love the pics of the FBCM. So the ones that have more white in the chest tend to be females/pullets? I am trying to decipher what I got out of my 4 that I hatched. Maybe I will take pictures and post them on the forum.

  • No, the ones that have more white on is not an indication of sex. It has nothing to do with sex. There was no difference in the sexes and the white on the breast.

  • Hi! I see you have not posted anything in a while. Are you selling eggs/chicks yet? I would love more information! Thanks!
    Michelle

  • Hey Michelle, I haven’t had a lot of time here on my blog for the new Marans of America Club is getting ready to be published and I have spent a great deal of time on that.
All the updates on the my Marans eggs and orders are on my actual Marans web site.
You can go there and sign the quest book for a reminder for me to get in touch with you when I get caught up on orders. It won’t be until early spring though.
Thanks and stay in touch and check back here shortly for and update on the new club site.

  • Have just started learning about Marans and would like to have some of these chickens. Could you or any one help get me started on where to purchase some chicks or pullets.
    Thanks,
    Drake Nicholson
    Cornelia, Ga.

  • Hey Drake , very nice to meet you. I am on back order for eggs right now but if you will check out the forum below then I am sure it lead you to the folks that have the eggs for sale.

Just sty in touch closely because this is the time of year where eggs are a hit & miss and if sellers have them you need to be right there on top of it ot order them.
There are a couple of folks on the forum who have some for sale now.
    Thanks
    Brenda

  • Hi

pls add me to your mailing list for eggs if you still are keeping one, I very much would like to get some of your eggs, the best i have seen so far.

    Carey J

    Patty

  • hallo
würde auch ganz dunkle bruteier von den marans schwarz kupfer suchen oder hühner
mir gefallen diese tiere und eier mit der sehr dunkle eierfarbe.

  • Hi Brenda,
I’m very interested in some hatching eggs but live in the Pacific Northwest and I’m concerned about shipping eggs so far. Do you know someone closer to me that might sell a dozen. I’m only interested in them for a home flock.
    Thanks!
    Kathy

    • Hello Kathy, I am so sure you can find just a great breeder that would be willing to ship you eggs from our breeder’s list on the Marans of America Club web site under breeders list. http://maransofamericaclub.com/breeders_list_12.html

Distance is not really that much of a factor. I think handling is more. I would rather have a gentler and more caring postal service rather than a quicker drop kick service, if you know what I mean. All the priority mail is 2-3 days. But I understand what you are saying. Good luck to you.
      Brenda

  • i want to buy some of your bcm eggs are there any avalable

  • Hi. I just ordered some of the Wade Jeane line of chicks and they came to me with some feathered shanks and some of them without feathered shanks…..Does this mean that they aren’t true to the French standard if no feathered shanks?

Also, can you tell the males from the females?

    • Not sure where you got them from………..but ALL should of been feathered shanks. No way you should of received any of the Jeane line without feathered shanks
In my opinion. There was something else there. The feather shanks birds are not true to the french standards. But it can be bred into them over time. As far as telling coq/pullets apart……..give it a little time. Whom did you get them from if you don’t mine me asking.

      Brenda

  • Ok, you confused me…lol…

    you said:

but ALL should of been feathered shanks.

    and then you said:

No way you should of received any of the Jeane line with feathered shanks
In my opinion. There was something else there. The feather shanks birds are not true to the french standards.

Did you mean they all should have had the feathered shanks?

I got them from a seller here in Alabama. Greg Cole.

If I want to raise them and I do want to keep them true to the French standard, then would I need to not breed the ones without feathered shanks? And just breed the ones that do have the feathered shanks?

I just want to educate myself as much as possible on the matter before I go into breeding them. They are still chicks right now.

    • Thank you so much…..I got that changed. LOL Are you saying you received some C Jeane from Greg Cole that does not have feathered shanks? That surprises me. But then I’m not sure what lines Greg had altogether. You shouldn’t have received any that didn’t have feathered shanks. As they were pure imports. But you have to remember……..they have been here long enough now to be bred to other lines. That’s why it is so important to work with them and keep the line as true as it can be. But a lot of folks are using them to improve a older US line they already had and today we are getting results. Greg is a very nice man and I am aware he had C1. But just not sure of what his breeding program consisted of with them. It sounds like you may have received a mixed C1/US. Greg can correct me if I am wrong. As for me………no I would not breed the C1 that DOESN’T have the feathered shanks. Because you will be passing that trait down as well. If that were all you had to work with, then yes. Hope I helped.
      Brenda

      • Brook may I suggest you check out the following site to get most of the information you need on breeding your C1’s
http://maransofamerica.com is a great forum where you can get some expert input from many authors sucj as Le Marans Book and of the Chicken Genetics books.
I would also check out the Marans of America Club. It is the only US club that has been endorsed by the French as being the club who members are striving to breed to the French Standards. It’s site is http://maransofamericaclub.com
As a member we will also be offering other services from the club site later in the year.

  • Yes, I really liked him and I really love the chicks and I would definatly buy from him again. I am still really pleased with my chicks but I assumed they would all have feathered shanks… but 5 out of 14 (he sent me 2 extras), I think, do not have any feathering on their shanks.

I figured you couldn’t breed the clean legged birds if you wanted to stay true to the French standard. I guess the others can be our eating eggs…as I can’t wait to taste what a dark marans egg is like.

When you say keep the lines as true as they can be do you mean breed Wade Jeane lines with Wade Jean lines and so on…???

  • Yes, you can do some inbreeding. Only some. Only problem is you don’t know how much is already been done. There are very few really good lines of Black Coppers here in the US. It’s a hit & miss. That’s where your research comes in. And lot’s of it. Being the US Marans delegate, that kind of gives me an advantage. I get to hear of all the lines good/bad. Best to find someone who is bringing in new blood altogether.
Check out the MOA forum and MOAClub. They will help you a lot. Brenda

    • brooke burkett

      Let me ask you this:

I have the Wade Jean line from Greg, so could you recommend someone I could buy eggs from that would be the best possible selection to breed my birds with to remain true to the standard?

      • Wish I could help you with that question at this time. But I would not introduce anything into them yet. Maybe this late fall you would have a better chance but right now, there is not a line I would introduce at all. But this is my own opinion. I have one source but they are not letting any of the chick or eggs go. But I will find out for you and let you know.
        Brenda Little

  • I love your stories about your birds , I joined Marans of America club back in Nov. 08 Got my first trio of Wade Jeane c1 in Feb. I now have a small flock and am selling chicks , and hatching more every week . These are great birds and I am going to keep them pure . Thank you for all your hard work ! Bruce Bacon in Frost Tx.

    • Thanks Bruce. Thanks for your support as well. Some times it lifts my day when folks take the time to notice.
      Brenda

  • I was wondering if or where I can get a few of these chicks, I am in N. AZ and tryinh hard to keep some rare and heritage breeds going on our littke farm

      • HI,
i HAVE PURCHASED 4 BCM’S FROM THE BEV DAVIS LINE. I HAVE 2 ROOS AND ONE OF THEM SEEMS TO BE ALL BLACK WHILE THE OTHER HAS THE COPPER NECK. i WAS LOOKING AT YOUR PICS AND SAW A PIC OF JESS WHEN HE WAS YOUNGER AND HE LOOKED ALL BLACK AS WELL. sHOULD i GIVE THIS LITTLE GUY TIME OR SHOULD I CULL HIM?

  • Hello! Loving your site/blogging & esp. the photos! I bought some chicks @ the local feed store that I was told are black copper marans. They look like those in your photos, but not sure of their pedigree but it doesn’t matter so much to me because I just love my chickens (have 2 Rhode Island Red & 2 Americaunas just for the hobby & eggs.)

My question … my BCMs were born first week of April … when might I see their first eggs? I got a rooster in the bunch (it was straight run purchase) and I’m thinking of keeping “Jack” because he’s such a beauty. I wasn’t planning to hatch any eggs however … thanks for the great site!

    • Great news !! You are going to love having marans as a project. My first BC’s started laying at 4 1/2 mos old and still laying almost 6-7 months later.
Fun birds and some that surprise you every days. You are going to love the eggs you received from them. Hope to get some pictures of your birds soon.
      Brenda

      • B – I’ve looked all over your site (learned a lot and if I keep looking that much I am going to want to buy some of your birds!) – how can I send you a couple of pix of my chicks?

      • Just send them to marans@littlepeddler.com

      • Hey Brenda!
Sent you some photos of my chicks and 1 of my 2 ‘roos last week … my photography isn’t as stellar as yours … you did such wonderful work with the portraits of the chicks – and you thought of such great backgrounds. You’ve inspired me to do more with my birds. I’ve been trying to coax them with food to “tame” them to be held – not having much luck. Guess I should have held them more as chicks. Any ideas? Did you ever publish that calendar?

  • I am thinking about getting marans but i am having trouble finding information about them.

Are they a cold hardy bird? I live in Canada and my winters can be quite cold. My coop is slightly heated enough to keep the water from freezing. Will they be able to tolerate this type of temp?

    • Hey Darlene……Not sure what the laws are of getting eggs to you from US to Canada. You have some idea? I would be willing to send you some.
      Brenda

  • I live in Missouri, Where can I find these true breed Black copper marans.

  • I would like to email you with some questions I have. I recently purchased a dozen Marans chicks, a variety of Black Copper Marans, Blue Marans and Black/Blue/Splash Birchen Marans. These birds are from a variety of the top breeder lines including Bev Davis, Wade Jeanne and Valentine, is what the seller claims. If I were interested in breeding, may I contact you? Thanks, Kathy

  • Hello Littlepeddler!

I was wondering if you have eggs for sale at this time. Thanks!

  • I am wanting to know if you have any fertile hatching eggs of the French Standard Black Copper Marans.

  • I HAVE ALOT OF RESPECT FOR YOU KEEPING THE BREED PURE. I JUST BOUGHT AN INCUBATOR AND WOULD LIKE TO KEEP A PURE BREED AS WELL MINE ARE FROM THE WADE JEAN LINE AS WELL I BOUGHT THEM FROM WADE JEANS NEPHEW THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL BIRDS WITH HEAVILY FEATHERED FEET AND LEGS AND LAY VERY DARK EGGS HOW DO I KEEP A PURE LINE ? PLEASE RESPOND THANKS MY FRIEND OF BLACK COPPER MARANS !!

    • Hey Denny thanks for your comment. YOu ask about keeping a pure line or keeping the pure french. I am not sure you would want to keep them a WJ pure line for the Jeane line needs improvements, but I would introduce a pure French bird into the line to improve it. The more you inbreed into the WJ line the more concentrated the flaws are bound to come out. It’s a great line no doubt. But some new blood has to be introduce to them. But with as many of them out there you can see that the flaws showing up more and more every day because people are just breeding with in the line. Hope this helps.
Be sure and check out the Marans of America Club http://maransofamericaclub.com it will lead you to many great forums so that you can watch the progress of this line.
      Brenda

  • the color of your eggs are beautiful, All of your chickens look great, Only one question, I have been trying to buy pullets ( 8 weeks and up ) and I cant find any, anywhere, I took the route of buying eggs from e bay 3 times, No luck at all, I have 2 pro incubators and have hatched out many other eggs, about 93 percen every hatch,, but the copper eggs no luck,, do you have any idea where i can buy pullets thanks Lou 443 985 9300

  • Hi,

I am so new to these birds I have about no info on them. I actually bartered my birds and got one C1 chick and 4 C1 eggs of which two hatched. They are all still young 3 to 8 weeks of age. Sorry if I sound dumb but what exactly does a “class C1″ mean. Is that the best quality I can get or not. And does that mean they will stay a C1 as they grow or do they need to be analyzed with age to keep the C1 label?

    • Hey Lori…..one is never dumb when they ask a question. Not real sure who you got your eggs from but the C1 does not stand for class. It sinply means Copper. There were two lines Copper 1 & copper 2. Just a way to keep the birds lines separate.
They do have problems and you will have to do some culling. I would suggest joining the Marans of America Club forum http://maransofamerica.com
or going to the Marans of America Club web site. http://maransofamericaclub.com
You will need to waych as your birds mature and watch for faults such as mossiness, partridge color and to much red in the rooster breast.
Just check out my web site Littlepeddler’s Marans http://littlepeddlersmarans.com and the other sites i mentioned and you should get all the information that will help you along with your breeding program.
      Brenda

  • I would give them all a chance until they are full feathered. The all black may be your better bet with not having so much copper in the neck and breast.
Unless you got a Black Marans and not a Black Copper. It’s good you got two different amounts in the color. Good Luck.

  • Janet taking good pics takes time and patience. And lots of effort. Matter of fact with the new marans pedigree coming up we are all going to have to start getting better shots of our birds if we want them to be banded.
Birds will eventually come to reason on what you want them to do. My roos know when I have a camera and now I can’t get them to relaxed and they cock that tail and I can’t get an accurate reading on the degrees of it . LOL
    Thanks for the compliments.
I appreciate some one taking the time to acknowledge my hard earn efforts.

And no, I was shot down the minute I tried to create a calendar from you know how’s group. So I just never pursued it again. Maybe some one like you can encourage me to try again.
    LOL
